Good morning everyone. The big, ongoing story this week is our quick return to reality, with autumn weather rushing in after 90 degree temps a couple of days ago. Overnight tonight and tomorrow, the core of this cool air will drift over the area, giving us our coolest/coldest night of the season so far.
Skies are clear and we’re drying out quickly from yesterday’s rain with the help of a brisk NNW flow. Expect sunny skies all day and a steady 20-25mph this afternoon and gusts nearing 35mph. Highs won’t be that bad and in the upper 60’s, but it’ll feel cooler with that wind.
Overnight tonight, radiational cooling will take hold as winds begin to subside somewhat and skies remain clear. We’ll dip into the mid 40’s here in the NYC area, and some eastern/central parts of Long Island may experience 30’s. Areas upstate will see their first widespread frost/freeze event for the season, where parts of the Catskills and Adirondacks will see upper 20’s.
We dial back the wind tomorrow but remain cool. Sunny skies continue and highs will get into the upper 50’s to low 60’s at best. The cooler than average weather only lasts a day though, and we bounce back nicely on Sunday with the help of an approaching front.
Clouds will begin to creep in on Sunday because of that front, and we’ll have highs in the low 70’s. Look for the slight chance of a scattered afternoon shower, but the main area of rain holds off till Monday afternoon.
Our next cold front will reinforce this seasonal/typical air for October, but not before we may see some mid to upper 70’s on Monday (depending on how much sun we get and timing of any precipitation). We’ll have the chance of some afternoon showers and maybe even a rumble or two, then clear things out again on Tuesday with seasonal temps.
In the long range, more typical October weather continues, and I don’t see a return any unseasonably/very warm temps for the next few weeks. Yes, we could see A warm or mild day here or there depending on the timing of any given cold front, but any hypothetical warmth would be short lived and seasonal/seasonably cool temps look to dominate this period.
Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
