NYC Beautiful Day Precedes Rainy & Cold Push

Good morning everyone. We have ourselves a picture perfect late-March day, with slightly above average temperatures and sunny skies. Unfortunately we only get one day of this, before rain returns and unseasonably cold air pushes in behind it. That cold air will be moving in fast enough, where interior parts of the northeast will see a brief period of snow Thursday before things come to an end.

We’ll start off with the good news and that is today. Look for sunshine, low to mid 60’s, and light winds throughout the region. Clouds will begin to increase overnight, and that’s when the changes begin.

Cloudy skies will greet us tomorrow morning, with rain moving in by late morning/early afternoon. We’re on the “warm” side of this system, so we’ll hold onto the low 60’s, but we’ll have rain, heavy at times during the afternoon, evening, and nighttime. Colder air begins to filter in overnight tomorrow as we drop into the low to mid 40’s, then things get complicated for the interior Thursday.

As a wave develops along the front, cold air will be brought down from Canada. This will help turn our remaining moisture into snow, especially in western PA, western NY, and well-upstate NY. Some of that frozen precip may sneak into central PA, briefly in extreme NW NJ, and the Catskills before departing. For us down here in NYC/Long Island, we’ll see a cold rain ending by late morning/early afternoon. If you’re out there driving, you could see a few globs of mush on your windshield with colder air aloft.

We go cold, sunny, and breezy, with highs in the low to mid 40’s. Temps modify on Saturday, with sunshine, calmer winds, and mid to upper 50’s. Near 60 temps return Sunday with sunshine.
