NYC Brief Cold Blast Quiet Christmas Ahead

NYC Brief Cold Blast Quiet Christmas Ahead

Good morning everyone. Unseasonably cold air has pushed its way in after some brief snow squalls yesterday afternoon/evening. The good news is that the cold air doesn’t stick around long, the bad news is for snow lovers; where a snow-hostile pattern continues into early January, and Christmas Day/New Year’s seems fairly quiet.

SATELLITE

Look for sunny skies, windy conditions, and an unseasonably cold day in the late January/early February realm. Highs today will only be in the mid to upper 20’s. Lows tonight won’t be as rough as last night, but we’ll still make it down into the upper teens to low 20’s.

REGIONAL RADAR

We slowly recover tomorrow, but still remain well below average, which is about 41-43 this time of year. Sunny skies remain, and highs will be in the low 30’s.

Our weekend looks quiet, with sun and clouds Saturday and mid 30’s. Then we modify back into the low to mid 40’s on Sunday for a seasonable day.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Going into next week, low pressure is suppressed well south and scoots off of the FL/GA coast and out to sea. This opens the door for a quiet week, with sunny skies and mid to upper 40’s to start our trek towards Christmas.

Because that low pressure is suppressed so far south, it’ll take away any prospects of a cold and windy Christmas; and falls somewhere in between that, and my Hail-Mary long range forecast of a mostly cloudy Christmas, near-seasonal, with the chance of a shower.

As of this moment, Christmas Day is looking like sun & clouds, near-seasonal, but dry.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

In the long range, a snow-hostile pattern continues into the New Year. We’ll have periods of seasonal temps, below average temps, but our system paths put us in the “mild” sector of each system for the time being.

That means for any chance of a major snowfall to occur in the next 2-3 weeks, we’ll have to watch for energy to stall out near the gulf after a system passes us, then head northeast as cold air moves in. Stay tuned, but for now our pattern seems somewhat quiet, interrupted by a rainy system here and there.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS

Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
