NYC COLD ARRIVES QUESTIONS CONTINUE NEXT SYSTEM

Good morning everyone. Cold air is filtering into the New York City area, which will give us a dry period at least. Meanwhile, questions still linger about our next system late weekend into early next week as to how far north it can go.

EASTERN SATELLITE

Cold and wind push in today, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. However, it’ll feel much colder with sustained winds up to 15mph and gusts possibly 25+. Tonight we drop into the the mid to upper 20’s and the wind should begin to relax.

REGIONAL RADAR

Clouds will be in and out this week as reinforcing shots of cold air help give us this cold block, but it’ll continue to remain dry aside from the slight chance of a sprinkle or flurry during this process. On Wednesday, we’ll cloud up but no action, highs in the mid to upper 30’s. Thursday we cloud up again and no action, highs remain the same. Maybe on Friday we’ll see some bright sunshine, but more cold air is moving in; mid to upper 30’s again.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

For your weekend, it’ll be relatively cold for this time of year. We’ll be experiencing mid 30’s as highs and low to mid 20’s ay night. Believe it or not, this is average for the dead of winter in NYC during mid to late January. This may also pose a problem for the next system that’ll at minimum make it to the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic coast via the Gulf coast.

Models are trending that system closer and closer, but the main models we look to are in agreement as of now that things still get suppressed to our south. Because of the trend, we’ll have to keep a close eye on things for any changes.

Timing will be key as well as how strong that cold air is this weekend. A weaker high to the north could allow it further north and give us some action. However, if the high is strong and nudges a bit deeper into the Northeast, out to sea she goes.

Again, it all bears watching and my biggest concern right now is the prospect of a severe weather outbreak for the Gulf Coast.
