Weather in 5/Joe & Joe Weather Show Latest Podcast
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our “Final Call” for our Blizzard of 2022. We have our first major snowstorm of the season getting ready to go, and our Nor’easter will be powerful enough to warrant some blizzard warnings along coastal sections of NJ, parts of Long Island, and SE New England. As in the past, we’ll briefly explain that the term Blizzard has nothing to do with amounts, and all to do with wind and visibility over a specific amount of time. We’re making a few minor changes here, so let’s get into it, and hopefully this shall suffice.
First and foremost, model watching should have stopped by now and it has stopped here. We are switching modes and will begin looking at the radar to see how quick snow fills into the area, where the heaviest snow bands set up, and how quickly things make an exit.
There are a few things that have changed, and many things that have not. To put one subject to rest, the storm has NOT shifted west. Southeast New England remains the focal point for the heaviest snow potential out of this; so regardless of how much extra eastern Long Island and parts of the NJ shore get, we’ll be watching for even bigger amounts near Cape Cod and that lower SE corner of RI & Mass.
Cloudy skies have already spread over the area, and we have some light snow scattered about. This is not the system itself, but it’s part of the process and ingredients to get this party started. Expect light snow on and off today, and most of it will not stick aside from colder surfaces such as grass, tree limbs, and cars. Highs today will be in the low to mid 30’s.
Temps plummet into the teens overnight and winds begin to pick up quickly. Snow will become steadier and heavier in intensity between 11pm and 2am tonight. Winds will range from 20-30mph sustained, with gusts in the near 40-45 range for NYC, 40-50 range for coastal Nassau, and 50-60mph for coastal NJ and Suffolk. The Forks, the Cape, and the islands in between may see 60-70mph gusts.
Snow and wind continue tomorrow and then things should begin to taper off by mid to late afternoon. Overall accumulations remain similar in terms of tight gradient and a sharp cutoff to the west, but we’re increasing the amounts to make adjustments for the overall intensity of the system and faster development.
We’re also adding a couple of extra ranges within that tight gradient, and we’ll watch the radar closely to see if everything comes to fruition. Look for a tight 2-4/3-6/4-8/6-10/8-12/12-16+ range across the area, and will will break it down as best as we can in order to not sound vague.
The 2-4/3-6″ range looks to set up to our west, with winter storm warnings extended to our west in case those areas in the 3-6″ range do see that 6″ mark. The 4-8″ range will range just to the west of Newark, getting very closely to Manhattan. 6-10″ will be reserved for Manhattan to Queens, but some areas of Brooklyn and Queens may see 10″+. 8-12″+ will be reserved for around the Nassau area, and 12-16″+ is all set for the Suffolk line and the NJ shore.
We’re putting “+”‘s into the mix to account for the unknown in terms of the heavier convection and where it may set up. Anyone who claims they know where this will be, is either lying, guessing, or anointed by Jesus to take over His duties.
Things clear out on Sunday, with sunny skies, breezy conditions, and highs in the mid 20’s, Some melting will take place with the opportunity for some “milder” temps Tuesday and Wednesday.
Please note that with regards to any severe weather, tropical storms, or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
