NYC Heavy Rain & Thunder Likely This Afternoon/Evening

Good morning everyone. We are closely watching a compact but vigorous wave of low pressure coming out of the Ohio River Valley, then trekking close to the NYC area. As it reaches the coast, it’ll slam into the muggy, sub-tropical marine layer; setting off heavy showers and storms. Due to their slow-moving and sub-tropical nature, we are looking for the potential of widespread flooding issues.

Clouds will be on the increase today as the day wears on. Look for the risk of showers and storms increasing from the afternoon, onward. The best chance will be during the evening and overnight hours. We’ll also see the risk of isolated severe weather, but the biggest hazard will be copious amounts of rain and flooding issues. Highs today will be a muggy low 80’s. As low pressure scoots off the coast, we’ll see partial clearing tomorrow, light northeast winds, and highs 75-80 at best.

WEATHER RADAR

Another system swings through on Saturday with the risk of some on & off showers and highs in the upper 70’s. Any leftover rain will depart on Sunday, with a few breaks in the clouds developing and highs in the low 80’s.

As far as the tropics are concerned, we have no active storms to report. However, we are closely monitoring the Cape Verde area off of Africa as activity is starting to wake up. This is normal for this time of year, but activity overall has been dead for the season. All it takes is for the shear to relax a bit, and we can have some problems on our hands. We will continue to watch these waves closely as they transit the Atlantic towards the Caribbean.
