NYC Heavy Snow Likely Overnight

Good morning everyone. Winter Storm Warnings continue unchanged as cold air locks in and moisture arrives later in the day. While our last system was a gentle, prolonged light to moderate snow which brought us the accumulations it did, this one will come down heavier and over a span of less time. The good news is that most of the action will be overnight, so most people will not be traveling on the roads.

SATELLITE

Look for clouds to continue to lower and thicken today. Temps in the low 20’s will slowly rise, but they won’t get high enough to change the outcome of this system. We’ll have a wide swath of overrunning moisture run into that cold air, with light snow developing some time later in the afternoon and later in the evening. It will fall and it will stick, then get heavier overnight. Snow rates at times will be 1-2″ per hour before tapering off tomorrow morning/early afternoon.

We’ll continue to keep the 4-8″+ snow totals up, with most of the impacted area seeing the upper echelon of that range. Where lighter snows beyond the main band or mixing occurs, look for the lower end of the spectrum. In some cases, we could see some warm front thundersnow or some brief banding. It’s these areas that could see the 8″+, but it’s impossible to say where that will occur until it does. There will also be no wind with this one as it is not a Nor’Easter or snow squalls. Snow will come straight down and down hard at times.

WEATHER RADAR

We clear out brief on Sunday, then clouds return ahead of our next system. This one will be too cold for snow, so look for overnight rain Sunday night into Monday.

Monday itself looks rainy with upper 40’s. This will cause some travel issues as roads get sloppy with slush and standing water.
