NYC MILD AIR REPLACED OVERNIGHT TONIGHT

Good morning everyone. We have one more mild one today before cold air works in relatively quickly tonight here in the New York City area. Meanwhile, cold air could push all the way to the Gulf come late week; which could mean two things – a severe weather outbreak down there, and next weekend’s system may stay compressed to the south.

EASTERN SATELLITE

Things will dry out today with the help of some sun AND some wind. Once the early morning fog lifts, expect some blue skies highs creeping up a few degrees for our low 50 lows. We’ll go for 55-60 today and westerlies moving 15-20mph. Overnight tonight, we dip down to the low to mid 30’s, which isn’t bad; but the bigger story will be our inability to recover much tomorrow.

REGIONAL RADAR

Sun and a stiff breeze continue tomorrow as that cold air works in, highs in the upper 30’s to near 40. On Wednesday, we turn off the wind but keep the cold and the sun; highs in the mid to upper 30’s. Expect essentially 35-40 degree temps to continue till around Saturday, where a reinforcing shot of cool air is expected. Remember, it’s December, but highs this time of year should still be in the mid 40’s, so this is relatively cold.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

That reinforcing shot of cold air Saturday could mean the death-knell for any potential system late weekend into early next week. We’ll be keeping an eye on things closely for any changes, but as of now, things continue to look sunny, cold, and dry. Low to mid 30’s Saturday and mid to upper 30’s Sunday.

For the Gulf low we’ll be watching, it could create some havoc along the Gulf Coast. Look for the possibility of widespread severe weather and even some tornados in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and maybe even southern/central Georgia and central/northern Florida. 

As mentioned prior, we have the cold and we have the systems, but this is not a snow-friendly pattern for those looking for a November repeat anytime soon. It can happen, but we’d have to look for the “surprise”, not what’s knowingly in front of us.

The biggest story going right now is the consistency of our below average cold. Although yesterday and today were “mild” (not nearly as mild as last year), we have constant pushes of cold air heading in behind each system. Meanwhile, my Christmas forecast holds strong.
