NYC Nor’Easter Brings October Heavy Rain Strong Winds

Good morning everyone. Our Nor’easter is underway as we speak, brining strong winds to the coast, and flooding rains slightly inland. Flooding issues have already occurred just west of NYC in parts of New Jersey, and we expect those issues to continue throughout the day. In other news, the late week system will cause some flood-related issues due to today’s rain, but it doesn’t look nearly as strong as our current system because this one robs the atmosphere of some energy for the next one.

SATELLITE

Heavy rain and gusty winds will continue this morning, with the peak happening now rain-wise. Things will taper off a bit, then the steady rain will return as low pressure spools up off of Cape Cod and retrogrades slightly towards Montauk.

This will be when the strongest winds occur, but anywhere away from the coast has nothing to worry about. Nor’easters generally don’t have the same “torque” as a hurricane, and the friction from land typically cuts the wind in half compared to the immediate coast. Expect a general 10-20mph sustained wind, with gusts to 30-35 in spots. Immediate shores will get gusts to 40-45, but the east end of Long Island could see 55-65mph gusts during the peak of this system.

Highs today in the 60-65 range, 50’s along the immediate shore.

WEATHER RADAR

We’ll start off tomorrow with morning clouds and maybe a sprinkle, then we begin to clear up a bit. Look for highs in the upper 50’s to low 60’s. That trend will continue with more sunshine on Thursday, and more upper 50’s to low 60’s.

We go downhill again on Friday, with increasing clouds and steady rain developing by afternoon/evening. We’re still working out the timing on this one, because we have to deal with this system before the next. Any delay with getting this out, will give us an extra few hours of dry weather late week.

Clouds and a few scattered showers will stick around for Saturday with upper 50’s to low 60’s, then we’ll have sunshine and a breeze on Sunday with upper 50’s to low 60’s. Since the next system isn’t as strong, it won’t be able to pull down the very cool air available, so we remain seasonable for Halloween.
