NYC Onset Wet Snow Possible Early Tuesday Morning
Good afternoon everyone. We continue to watch our system today move through the area with light to moderate rain in spots. That’ll set us up for our showdown on Tuesday for the first true winter storm of the season. While NYC isn’t looking at anything of significance, we could see some wet snow or wet snow mixed with rain to start things off. Meanwhile in northeast PA, extreme NW New Jersey, southeast New York, and central New England, we could see a wide swath of 6-10″ of heavy wet snow; with locally higher amounts possible.
SATELLITE
We have a nasty day today, with cloudy skies, cold rain, and highs in the low 40’s. We’ll drop into the low 30’s overnight as colder air begins to spill in.
WEATHER RADAR
Tomorrow is sunny and chilly with highs in the low 40’s and steady northwesterlies. As that colder air locks in, today’s system stalls across the Gulf Coast; then combines with a disturbance coming out of the Rockies. As they merge, moisture will ride up the Appalachians and East Coast and into the cold air.
While we don’t have the perfect setup for snow in NYC, there could be some cool enough air to see some flakes at the beginning. Best chance of this occurring will be late overnight Monday into early morning Tuesday as lows dip into the near 30 range. Any mixing that occurs will turn to plain cold rain, wind driven at times for a nasty Tuesday.
As of now, the Euro has a slightly colder solution with some back-end snow possible across areas of NJ just to the west of NYC. Meanwhile, the GFS has a slightly warmer solution that is more robust moisture-wise. We’ll probably get something in between, and will have to keep a close eye on that rain/snow like as our system departs.
Winter storm watches and advisories will likely get posted over the next 12-24hrs for interior parts of the Northeast & New England. Stay tuned!
