NYC PM Severe Weather Possible As Hot Weather Continues

NYC PM Severe Weather Possible As Hot Weather Continues

Good morning everyone. We have another hot day today and all eyes will be on the radar this afternoon and evening to see if severe storms make it this way. A convoluted series of fronts, including an old stationary front, an approaching warm front, and an area of low pressure, will combine to give the area enough juice to kick off some nasty weather. None of these boundaries are strong in terms of air masses differences/changes, but that low pressure riding along everything gives the atmosphere the twist it needs, combined with this heat and sunshine, to cause some fireworks.

SATELLITE

Nothing you see going on, provides us with any relief from the heat until Saturday, and even that will every brief. Expect clouds and sun today, then we’ll watch for that line to approach the area some time between 5 and 9pm. That pause will give us enough sunshine and heating hours to get us back into the 90-95 realm today. We’ll save those mid 90’s for the most notorious warmer spots, such as downtown Brooklyn and central Queens.

As far as the storms are concerned, the line could break in two or weaken as it nears, but it could also survive; which is why we are discussing the prospect of severe weather. Anything that does form, will be capable of damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and an isolated tornado (especially to our west and north).

REGIONAL RADAR

We rinse and repeat tomorrow, but I don’t think the storms will be as widespread. Regardless, look for a hot and humid 90-95, and the chance of some afternoon storms. Some of those may also be on the severe side.

We’ll have the slight chance of a PM storm on Friday, and we could chase 90 once more before Saturday “cools” off.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

Your weekend is looking great for the last weekend of July. Sunshine and less humidity will visit Saturday, with highs in the mid 80’s for a seasonally average day.

Unfortunately, the relief is brief and we go for 90 again on Sunday, but the humidity won’t be too bad until Monday or Tuesday.

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

Down the road, I continue to see this broken chain of temps ranging from the upper 80’s to low/mid 90’s without much relief or brief relief. I’m continuing to keep an eye between the first and second week of August for another possible heatwave or near-heatwave with a new ridge trying to build.

In the tropics, we’re keeping an eye on 2 areas of disturbed weather, but the one of most concern is what just became Tropical Storm Gonzalo. Gonzalo will continue to head west and into the lower eastern Caribbean over the course of the next few days. Barbados, the Grenadines, and Jamaica all need to take notice and watch the path/strength; then we’ll have to start watching the Yucatan and Gulf.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS

Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
