Good morning everyone. We have a hot one in play today in New York City, then the forces go into motion for some late weekend relief. However, we have to get past some muggy juice and thunderstorms before we get there.
In the meantime, we have blazing hot sun, light west winds, and dew points in the mid to upper 60’s. Air quality and heat advisories are in effect as we soar into the the low to mid 90’s. Tomorrow, the gears begin to turn towards some changes, but we’ll still be very warm to hot.
A slow moving cold front starts to make its transit into the NYC metro area tomorrow evening. Before we see any rain, look for sun and clouds, muggy conditions as our wind switches to the south, and highs near 90. During the late afternoon/early evening, strong to severe storms will approach the area. This will mark the first real front we’ve had all summer with two completely different air masses, so depending on where the energy sets up, someone will see some real nasty stuff. Relief comes this weekend, but it’ll be a slow process.
We’ll have one more very warm one on Saturday as our front is slow to move out and the onshore flow is slow to start. We’ll have the slight chance of some lingering morning storms, then light westerlies will help boost our temps into the upper 80’s to near 90. For Sunday, a stiff NE breeze and a seasonably cool high pressure system will help keep temps in the upper 70’s to near 80. Aside from isolated rain-related cool temps, this will be the first cool day we’ve had all season with the sun out.
We go for a cool repeat on Monday, with sunny skies, northeasterly flow, and upper 70’s to near 80; then we gradually start to warm up as high pressure begins to pull away. By Tuesday, we’re back into the low 80’s, then mid 80’s for Wednesday with the slight chance of storms.
As of this moment, warm to very warm temps continue mid-week next-week and into the last weekend of August. Most of this period will range from the low 80’s to the upper 80’s depending on the final wind profile and your location, with some front-related, near 90 heat still possible to end the month of August.
