NYC Tropical Storm Elsa Update

Good afternoon everyone. We’re enjoying a nice, hot day today, and keeping an eye on several features. Read below for the latest.

SATELLITE

We’re near 90 in spots of the NYC area already and we’re expecting low to mid 90’s throughout most areas aside from the immediate shore. Another area of energy is expected to transit the area and create enough instability for some late afternoon/evening thunderstorms, but don’t expect anything like yesterday. So far it looks like a broken line, thin in nature, heading in from the North or NNE again. Any thunderstorms that do develop may be severe in nature, but also brief.

WEATHER RADAR

Tropical Storm Elsa has made landfall in Florida and has sustained winds at 55mph. We expect it to weaken and accelerate as she moves north, then northeast towards the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states. She’ll be bringing flooding rains, windy conditions, and isolated tornadoes (until she weakens a little more).

As time goes on, Elsa is trending towards a “direct” hit or indirect hit for the NYC/LI area some time early to late Friday morning. I put direct in quotes because the impact will be nothing like a Sandy or Irene type system. Depending on the final track, a “direct” hit would equate to minimal to moderate tropical storm force gusts, tropical-like rain, and embedded thunder. We could also see some enhanced tides and minor coastal flooding at high tide.

That is the extent of it at worst. Think of it as a fast moving summer Nor’Easter, but with tropical roots and big ole fat rain instead of itty bitty stingin’ rain.
