NYC Very Cold Winter Continues

Good afternoon everyone. Very cold air is locked in across 2/3rds of the Nation, including the Northeast. A compact, powerful coastal storm will intensify overnight tonight along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, then pushed well offshore. Aside from fringe effects such as enhanced tides and blustery winds, the only thing this monster is going to do, is pull down more cold air across the area.

As of now, our long range outlook looks like it’ll be majority-very cold; with little modification in between systems. It also looks as if the majority of those systems will take a more southern route, locking in the cold air even more, and giving us a few more chances of some light snow passing by here and there.

Our snowfall this year has been near-average, but winter overall has been a brutal one and colder than the last few we’ve seen. Check out the latest on the rest of the weekend and workweek below.

SATELLITE

For the rest of today, look for highs in the upper teens to low 20’s as we have essentially peaked for the day. Blustery conditions will set in overnight with low pressure intensifying well to our south; and lows dropping into the 5-10 degree range. Tomorrow isn’t much better, with more blustery conditions and highs 20-25; but it’ll feel just as cold as today.

WEATHER RADAR

After lows in the 10-15 range tomorrow night, we bounce back into the near 30/low 30 range for Monday, onward. Lows will be in the teens each night with the help of remaining snowpack, clear skies, and lighter winds.

By Thursday, we begin to struggle again to reach freezing as temps dip back into the 25-30 range and lows in the upper single digits to low teens. Look for the chance of some brief light snow overnight Friday with a reinforcing shot of bitter cold air moving in.

For the moment, highs on Saturday may not climb out of the teens or low 20’s. Some lows may be in the single digits or even close to 0/negative; especially away from the NYC metro area. Highs and low Sunday look about the same.

Even into the following week, more bitter cold is expected to plunge down from Canada and impact a large swath of the Nation; keeping the Tri-State region in ice-box-mode.
