NYC Vigorous Wave Increases Thunderstorm Threat

Good morning everyone. Yesterday we were talking about a spoke of energy coming through the Northeast today and the conditions it may bring with it. We mentioned some thunderstorm activity, rain changing to wet snow or graupel upstate, and all of that good stuff. Things are actually looking more intense this morning as we go a touch milder today than previously thought, adding some extra juice to the atmosphere due to sharper contrast.

SATELLITE

For this morning, we’ll enjoy some sunshine and a relatively mild start. Look for temps in the near 60/low 60 range as clouds begin to increase. Somewhere between the hours of 12 and 4pm, a narrow band showers and storms will move through quickly with a compact wave of energy going just to our north. This fast moving band will contain damaging winds in spots and the chance of pea to dime size hail. The best chance to see the strongest action will be northern spots of the City and into the lower Hudson Valley.

In the Catskills and northward, showers and storms may quickly turn into a shot of brief, heavy wet snow or mix due to intense evaporative cooling. Some spots in higher elevations may see a quick trace – 2″ of snow.

WEATHER RADAR

Tomorrow is a lot more quiet, with AM sun, PM increasing clouds, and highs in the near 50 range. The increasing clouds is in reposes to a reinforcing shot of cool air, and that’ll set us up for a chilly and windy Monday.

Sunshine will increase on Monday, but we don’t make it out of the 40’s under blustery conditions. Things calm down on Tuesday and we return to the 50 realm. We’ll have 60’s by Wednesday and Thursday, but another cold front will knock us back down into the upper 40’s/low 50’s by Friday.
