NYC Watching Cold Air Race Precip Saturday

Good morning everyone. We had a little cheap thrill surprise yesterday as cold air hung around in certain spots of NYC and Long Island. The potential for some back end frozen precip on Saturday won’t be a surprise though, as we’ve been talking about this possibility for over a week now. It’ll be a race to the finish line, and we’ll discuss it below.

Sunshine returns today as does seasonable temps. We’ll have highs in the near 50 range both today and tomorrow, but clouds increase tomorrow PM ahead of our fairly big system.

WEATHER RADAR

Saturday’s forecast is actually not very complicated. Stubborn moisture hanging around the Southeast will join up with an area of disturbed weather coming out of Texas, then take the inland route up the I95 corridor. This is not a snow-friendly route for NYC, Long Island, and many other spots. However, there’s some very cold air behind this system, and it’ll be on the move before the moisture is out of the Northeast.

As of now, the best chance to see a changeover from heavy rain to snow, possibly heavy at times, will be in Central/NE PA, NW NJ, and upstate NY. We’ll be watching this closely as that cold air approaches NYC. The questions remains – will there be any precip left when cold air gets here? That remains to be seen, but for NYC Metro, even if we do see a changeover, it’ll be a parting shot and relatively brief compared to other locales. The majority of this system, if not all of it, will be heavy rain and windy conditions for NYC.

Sunshine returns on Sunday, but it’ll be a cold and blustery day in the upper 30’s. Milder and more seasonable air creeps back in on Monday as highs get into the low to mid 50’s.
