NYC Winter Weather Settles Into Area

Good afternoon everyone. Unseasonably cold air is quickly sweeping into the Northeast behind our storm system, with heavy lake effect snows bombarding east and southeast facing shores on Lake Erie and Ontario. In some cases, more than 3ft of snow could fall in areas where the heaviest bands row over the same spots.

This is all in response to arctic air blowing over the relatively warmer lakes, and it looks as if unseasonably chilly to cold air is here to stay for a while. In 10-14 day the long range outlook, we have at least 2 reinforcing shots of unseasonably cold air, with each one possibly being progressively colder than the last. In fact, within the next 2 weeks, don’t be surprised to see some single digit temperatures possible overnight in areas of New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Meanwhile, the same cold front that is bringing cold air to the Northeast, has now pushed through most of the Southeast and will drape itself across Florida today. Look for the risk of scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms today across much of the state as cold air clashes with relatively warm & humid air. While we don’t see any organized severe weather risks, we could see some storms containing strong winds, hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rain.

Look for more of the same on Monday and Tuesday, then we begin watching for our next reinforcing shot of cold air some time on Wednesday or Thursday.
