Winter 2016-2017 NYC Colder Average Snowfall
We continue our look at Winter 2016-2017 and today we look at New York City. The overall theme in my view is a reversion back to a more normal winter weather scheme across the Eastern US. The longer term indicators of Siberian snow cover which is near records highs, and the weak la nina pattern in the Pacific Ocean leads us to go for a colder than normal winter for the period of December through February on the order of about 2 degrees or so. The seasonal snowfall map above should be taken with a grain of salt as I think the numbers near the coast are skewed too low by about 5 inches.

I did skew northern areas of New York City, specifically the north Bronx to be slightly higher than normal since my general theme is that the further north you go, the more snow you are likely to see. I also think that given the drought pattern continues with no strong signs of easing, I would tend to favor smaller systems rather than the one big one. Of course the one big one could skew everything much higher. For now I think the best approach is to wait and see if the drought pattern truly eases in the coming months. Remember there is nothing that says it can’t be colder than normal with less snow at the same time.
