ARCTIC AIR FOLLOWS EARLY SPRING DAY
ARCTIC AIR FOLLOWS EARLY SPRING DAY – Good morning everyone. The cold weather gods are angry that we have been rejoicing in this break, so prepare for some vengeance in the form of 7 days of cold; and possibly some snow thrown in for good measure.
First, we have to get past this dynamic and very wide system. Right now, she stretches from the lower Mississippi to Maine, and all of that moisture will be sliding our way. Even though we aren’t under a flood watch, I stress again that localized flooding could be a major issue with melting snow and clogged/covered storm drains.
Look for rain, heavy at times, a few rumbles of thunder, and highs near 60. There will also be issues with locally dense fog before the rain starts, and during lulls in the action. Strong southerly winds will also whip across the area, so expect 15-20mph sustained winds, with gusts near 30-35 in stronger cells of rain.
Then, the other issues begin. After the rain passes tomorrow, frigid air will filter in. Temps will drop through the 30’s by late afternoon tomorrow, causing moist areas to feeeze. Black ice will make travel treacherous in areas overnight tomorrow as temps drop into the low to mid teens.
Frigid air remains in the NYC area until Friday, where we warm up slightly, then get another boost over next weekend. However, in between we have the chance of a cheap thrill or light/moderate snow event on Tuesday as a vigorous but compact upper low moves over the area.
