Heaviest Storms Stay West of New York City
08/28/24 10:57am ET
Good morning everyone. Our cold front in the Northeast is on its way, but not before we squeeze in a hot day along coastal/near coastal cities. Look for mid 90’s, a few upper 90’s, and very muggy conditions before the fireworks start tonight in the form of some scattered strong to severe thunderstorms. It looks as if most of the actions stays to the west of New York City, but for those who do see some, damaging winds and large hail will be on the menu. Comfortable conditions begin tomorrow with low to mid 70’s throughout the area.
We’ll watch the Ohio Valley fire up again in terms of some severe weather. Leftover energy from yesterday’s severe weather is riding west along the front from Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana in the form of some thundershowers. Expect that area to pop off again today with clusters of severe weather. Damaging winds and large hail are the biggest risk with these, but we cannot rule out an isolated tornado. The area of concern today is parts of Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and possibly into Maryland & Delaware.
We’ll also see the same for the Upper Midwest tonight in North & South Dakota, but the big story could be reserved for tomorrow. Another reinforcing area of cooler and drier air is set to come out of the Rockies and into the plains, bumping into that hotter and more humid air. We’re expecting a long broken line or several long multi-directional lines forming along this new boundary tomorrow late afternoon/evening.
Widespread severe weather is possible from the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and possibly down into northern Texas. Damaging winds, very large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and numerous tornadoes are possible along this line. Stay tunes and we will keep a close eye on tomorrow night’s risk.
Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –
SATELLITE
Look for hot & muggy conditions today with widespread mid 90’s. We could also see some upper 90’s in areas such as downtown Brooklyn and central/northern Queens; plus across the river in Newark and Jersey City. We’ll hold off on the storms and put in the slight chance of a late PM storm, but most of the action looks to the west and southwest of us.
WEATHER RADAR
We’ll have a mix of sun & clouds both tomorrow and Friday with much cooler temps. With cold air aloft and summer sun working the atmosphere, we could see a few popcorn showers and storms each afternoon. Highs will be in the mid 70’s each day.
Your weekend looks slightly warmer with near 80 temps each day, more clouds than sun, and the slight chance of a few showers. I wouldn’t cancel any BBQ plans, but just mind the chance of a few raindrops. Monday continues to look very mild/warm and dry with sunshine and near 80 temps.
