HURRICANE IRMA DISPLAYING STRENGTHENING SIGNS – Good afternoon folks. Irma is emerging from Cuba now, and sadly she is showing signs of regrouping as she heads towards the Florida Keys.
Winds as of earlier were at 125mph sustained, and 155mph gusts. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next bulletin notches up the power. Convection is started to increase again around the eyewall and Irma is regaining her buzzsaw shape.
Regardless of Irma’s final west coast track, the east coast cannot take their eye off of Irma. Tornado watches are in effect, and storm surge warnings remain in effect for the east coast of Florida. These areas can also see hurricane force winds, or at minimum, hurricane force wind gusts. Do not return to coastal or near coastal areas.
For the Keys, they will be the first to experience the full brunt of Irma. Outer bands have already started to rake the islands. Category 3 sustained winds, possibly Category 4, and Category 5 wind gusts are a certainty. The surge throughout the Keys will be 5-10 feet above ground on average, possibly higher in some places. That doesn’t include waves on top of that 5-10ft number, so the results will be Catastrophic.
Late tonight, I will update what the west coast should expect and it’s not pretty. The time to evacuate for the west coast and make your final arrangements are now.
