Long Range Outlook Shows Cold Not Finished Yet

02/19/24 10:52am ET

Good morning everyone. Our system that brought flooding rains and embedded thunderstorms of Florida, is slowly making its way across the Bahamas & out to sea over the next few days. As it departs, interaction with high pressure up north will help keep a steady breeze along the East Coast, plus some enhanced tides.

Other than that, we are very quiet until late in the week, when a frontal system will bring some rain along the East Coast (sans any severe weather), and some possible snows for higher elevations in the Northeast & New England. That’s really the only thing we have going on aside for more storminess for the West Coast, where copious amounts of rain and snow continue to help refill the reservoirs and build an incredible snow base for the spring/summer melt.

Lake Mead, which is a good marker of how dire our drought was out there, continues to rise and is up another 10ft or so since January. We are far from normal, but if it took 20 years to deplete things down to where we are now, it could take just as long to replace it. However, the West Coast is on a great path in terms of the road to recovery.

In the long range, we continue to see the parade of systems hitting the West Coast, with another possible big one next week. The upper Midwest may get a little more active in terms of snow and ice, which is typical for this time of year as we enter March. We will also see with those systems, another couple of shots of unseasonably cold air possible for the Northeast (and possibly the Southeast); so while we can’t sit here and tell you whether the snow is done or not for big cities in the Northeast, we can tell you that at minimum, it doesn’t look like the cold air is done.
