LOW PRESSURE BRUSH BRINGS NYC LIGHT SNOW

LOW PRESSURE BRUSH BRINGS NYC LIGHT SNOW – Good morning everyone. Parts of winter have returned and we turn our eyes to watch each system closely for any nuance that can make a difference between rain or snow, hit or miss. Today, we’ll have a little bit of all four.

Cloudy skies and a light northeast wind will rule the day as a fairly vigorous low pressure system rides along yesterday’s front that stalled out in the Southeast. Highs will be a seasonably cool upper 30’s to low 40’s. We’ve been talking about this for about a week now, and the big question was – how close does this low pressure get and how will upper energy coming out of the Great Lakes region interact with this system.

We never expected anything big, but our questions are pretty much answered now. Low pressure will come close enough to give the area a chance for a period of light snow. As far as timing, look for flurries/light rain possible late in the afternoon/early evening, then a generally light snow overnight. The chance increases as you go further east and out onto Long Island, especially Suffolk County.

The actual setup and how far the precip shield is able to get, remains to be seen and won’t be seen until later this afternoon. For amounts, we are in cheap thrill territory here if anything at all. Look for a trace to 1″ in the NYC area if that light snow is able to creep far enough east. For Long Island, a trace to 2″ is possible, with any upside surprise possiblity contained to central/east end of Long Island.

Low 30’s return with the passage of this system, then Thursday looks to be the warmest day of the week with mid 40’s. After that, we have another complex system for Thursday night into Friday which could provide mixed precip or a changeover to snow before departing. Next weekend is looking cold and breezy, with temps slightly below normal at least for the first half, then a return to below normal temps at the beginning of the following week.

With a fast moving, active pattern, our arctic air will be coming in via short-lived, fast moving waves; so look for 2-3 days of cold temps, then a system-related warmup, then a return to the cold.
