NYC HEAT UNDERWAY WHILE RELIEF QUESTIONS ARISE – Good morning everyone! Bright sunshine fills the sky today as we await to see if any afternoon puffy clouds become too puffy and isolated storms pop up. This will pretty much be the theme of the entire weak; upper 80’s to near 90 (some of the more notorious spots in the NYC area breaking 90) today through Friday, with the chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm at any time in the afternoon (best chance Wednesday). The only difference in each day is that humidity will increase as we trek further into the week, making things more and more uncomfortable as we go on.
For those who like severe storms, part of the problem we’ve had this year aside from the stubborn marine-layer in May and June, is the timing of fronts. Plus, gradual cool-downs in air masses instead of a defining sharp drop in the form of a strong, fast moving cold front. Also, we’re lacking any “twist” in the atmosphere to counteract the lack of dynamics, as any low pressure system associated with these cool-offs go well to our north.
For now, it looks like this pattern continues. We’ll have our block of above average warmth and humidity and we’ll have our break; but without any real defining boundary, an afternoon approach, and/or low pressure moving just to our west or just north, it looks as if our non-humid and seasonable temps will arrive with a whimper again.
On Saturday, our return to seasonable temps begins, with sun and clouds, and highs on the low to mid 80’s. We’ll have to wait and see if humidity holds on for part of Saturday, but Sunday looks to be a beautiful, breezy day and temps in the low 80’s. For Monday, we remain seasonable but clouds may roll back in later in the day as warmer air tries to fight back for Tuesday.
Unless any anomalies occur or any tropical system reveals itself in the next week or two, I’m sticking with the notion that we warm up and crank up the humidity again after seasonable temps Sunday, Monday, and possibly Tuesday. Another block of seasonable temps will return after another possible warmup midweek next week, but what looked like a long break, may get cut short again as mid to upper 80’s try to return once more for the 2nd third of August. Because this is so far down the road, it’s all speculation, but this is what I’m seeing for now barring any surprises.
In terms of any chances of severe weather associated with any isolated/individual cells that may pop up, especially north and west of the NYC area, stay tuned and we will watch day to day.
