NYC Nice Weather Continues Till Saturday

09/05/24 11:25am ET

Good morning everyone. Pleasant weather and widespread temperatures in the 70’s continue until Saturday; when our next cold front will reinforce the cooler and drier air. Afternoon and evening showers and storms are expected throughout the Northeast on Saturday, then we go cool to mild on Sunday depending on your location. Warmer conditions in the 80’s return midweek next week, but nothing outrageous.

Our only other feature for the Northeast is low pressure between Cape Hatteras and Bermuda which may or may not develop into a tropical depression. It is expected to stay far enough offshore not to impact us with wind or rain, but we could see rough surf and sea conditions over the next few days.

We remain focused on the heavy showers and thunderstorms along the Gulf Coast stretched across a wide area from Texas, to Louisiana, and into Florida. The most concentrated area of precipitation remains along coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana, but Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle could get into that heavier action as time goes on.

The severe weather risk is low at this time, but we could still see some isolated areas where thunderstorms reach severe limits. Look for locally strong winds, small hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk of waterspouts along near-shore areas of the Gulf Coast. Flooding remains our primary concern as heavy rain continues to fall over the same areas.

Meanwhile, that cold front due into the Northeast on Saturday, is bringing some heavy showers and storms to the U.P. of Michigan, parts of Wisconsin, and extreme northeast Iowa. This is the batch of storms that never really panned out last night and got off to a late start. We’ll be watching this line very closely for the potential for some isolated severe weather as it chugs to the east. The primary risk will be damaging winds, frequent lightning, and torrential rain, but we could see some large hail along the lower quadrant of this line.
