NYC NOREASTER SERVES POSSIBLE COASTAL GALE STORM FORCE WINDS

NYC NOREASTER SERVES POSSIBLE COASTAL GALE STORM FORCE WINDS – Good morning everyone. We have 3 absolutely beautiful days ahead for us in the New York City area, but consider it the calm before the storm as ingredients gather to give us our first Nor’easter in months.

Yesterday, I spoke up low clouds and fog hanging around in the morning. The fog is long gone, but the clouds will stick around for a bit, keeping temps from going “too mild”. Look for highs in the mid 50’s to near 60 in most areas today, including the coast. Tomorrow we wash and repeat, but with more sun and winds switching around to the south/southwest; highs near 60, low 50’s at the coast spending on when that wind shift occurs. Wednesday, the sun continues and we should see mid 50’s to near 60 again, maybe a few degrees cooler at the coast.

Clouds lower and thicken Wednesday night as the first part of our system begins to head our way. Low pressure heading up into the Great Lakes area will bring late morning/early afternoon rain to the area by Thursday. This is NOT the Nor’easter at this stage and is front-related rain. Overnight, that low pressure racing northeast will transfer its energy to the coast, where low pressure will spool up and enhance the rain and wind. Rain and wind increase further by early Friday morning and make for miserable day.

Normally, a system such as this wouldn’t be a big deal and we can just brush it off. However, with a fully saturated ground and even more rain on the way, 30-40mph winds could help topple trees because the roots have nothing to hold onto. So along with localized street flooding in prone areas or non-prone areas at times of the heaviest of rain, be aware that seemingly healthy trees could get the push in conditions we wouldn’t normally consider severe or any stronger than our typical Nor’easters.

If everything unfolds the way it looks at this moment, coastal areas will bear the brunt of our storm late week and into the weekend. With less friction along the shoreline, areas along the immediate coast could see 40-60 mph winds and maybe some localized higher gusts, especially out on eastern Long Island, Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. Add a full moon and slow departing low into the mix, and you have yourself issues with coastal flooding as well.

Remember, Nor’easters are not hurricanes. Even when their lowest pressure dips into Hurricane realm, it’s still not a Hurricane and the structure is different. Coastal areas do not have to worry about another Sandy or Irene. However, if you know your area floods during a strong Nor’easter, then you know there will be issues. Do what you need to do now to help protect your property. That includes checking your basement pumps to make sure they are working, and securing property in areas you know get some water. Also from Thursday onward, don’t park your car on streets you know get water unless you want mother nature to claim your vehicle.

Low pressure will be slow to depart, so look for high tides to continue due to a prolonged easterly fetch and our full moon. I’m also not taking off the table of some possible flakes in the air as our system finally departs. That being said, I’m not focusing on that right now as the main story will be possible downed trees, power outages, localized street flooding, and coastal flooding.

Stay tuned as we continue to watch our system develop and evolve.
