NYC Quick Burst Moderate Heavy Snow Likely

Good late morning everyone. We have ourselves a beautiful January day today which is the “quiet before the storm” cliche. It’ll be a brief one, but a decent one for that matter, and tomorrow’s morning rush hour will be impacted in many areas of the NYC Metro.

We start out sunny today with near 40 temps for a comfortable day this time of year. Clouds will increase late, and light snow should start falling a couple of hours before sunrise. With lows in the mid to upper 20’s, it’ll stick easily.

I’m looking for a moderate to heavy band of snow to develop just before or around sunrise, and snow should last until mid to late morning in varying intensity. We might even see some sun later in the day, but the “damage” will be done as far as the AM travel.

I’m not doing any fancy snow maps on this one since it’s a quick shot and a general blanket of light to moderate accumulations. Expect a 2-4/3-5″ type snowfall, with the slight chance of a few 6″+ “lollipop” hits out on the east end of Suffolk and/or where the heaviest snow band sets up.

The speed of the system will save us on any real big numbers, and this is just about all our first snowstorm of the season will be capable of.

WEATHER RADAR

Saturday we go sunny, breezy, and cold with highs in the low 30’s; then some light AM mix possible Sunday under cloudy skies and near 40 temps.

Much colder air heads in for Monday, and lows overnight will drop into the mid to upper teens in NYC, low to mid teens away from the City
