NYC RECORD TEMPS POSSIBLE TODAY TROPICAL MONDAY BREWING
Good morning everyone. We have another hot one in New York City on our hands today with record to near-record temps possible as this day in 1953 was “cooler” than yesterday back then. We also have very warm to hot, tropical air trying to return after a brief break.
First off, we haven’t even turned the lights on yet and it’s 81 degrees, possibly even warmer once this goes to press. Look for highs in the mid to upper 90’s with scorching sunshine and oppressive humidity. The 1953 record of 95 degrees will be threatened today, let’s see what happens.
EASTERN SATELLITE
Tomorrow, we crank up the juice even more as our cold front approaches. We go for near 90 temps tomorrow and add in the chance of scattered storms. As stated yesterday, most of the energy will be going to the north of us (and some to the south of us), but if we do see a few reach down here, some could reach severe limits. This will mark the end of the hot weather, for now…..
REGIONAL RADAR
On Friday, the maritime air spills in with the help of highs pressure pushing easterlies our way. A weak area of energy just to our south will keep clouds in the area and the slight chance of some light rain and drizzle. We’ll dip into the mid to upper 70’s Friday, then repeat to start Labor Weekend on Saturday with more clouds than sun; slight chance of a light shower, highs in the mid to upper 70’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
As of this moment, it looks as if warm and tropical air begin to win out Sunday as high pressure pulls away, taking the easterlies with it. This will also bring the sun back as well as humidity. However, energy will remain in the area as we take on a more familiar trough-like pattern we’ve seen this summer. So expect a tropical, humid day Sunday, with highs in the mid 80’s and the chance of a shower and/or storm at any point in the day.
For your Labor Day Monday, theres a 50/50 chance right now we go for 90 again. Even if we don’t reach it though, it’s looking very warm and humid, very Florida-like with puffy tropical clouds, and the chance of a shower or storm.
In the long range, I’ve discussed the chance of heat returning and I’m keeping it on the table for now. Next week has the potential to be another hot one, with a few September 90’s possible IF things stay on track. Overall, September may wind up above average temp-wise or at least half of it might. We’ve also begun watching the tropics a little closer as things become more active. There’s nothing to speak of as of now, but wave activity wants to increase; plus we’ll have old fronts to watch for potential sources of development.
