NYC Seasonal Start To Week Active Late Wednesday Ahead

Good morning everyone. We are under the full protection of departing high pressure today in the NYC Metro Area, giving us a very seasonal early August day. For the week, we bring in some August mugginess at times, but we get all of the activity out of the way for a possibly grand weekend weather-wise.

For today, high pressure drifts away but protects us throughout. A maritime fetch will keep some clouds mixed into the area, but they’ll be scattered about, with more blue than grey. We should have a beautiful sunset in the works, especially if the alto-cumulus stick around, mixing with some higher clouds. Expect a very seasonal and comfortable day with highs in the low to mid 80’s; dead-on average for this time of year. (slightly cooler at the coast with the ocean influence)

Overnight tonight and tomorrow morning, we’ll have the slight chance of a thunderstorms as we transition the airmass towards a more humid and warmer one. We’ll get it out of the way early though, and the rest of Tuesday is looking sunny, warm, and humid; highs in the mid 80’s, possibly a few upper 80’s dotting the area in the usual spots.

REGIONAL RADAR

On Wednesday, we begin to increase the activity in the area as a front and several waves spinning off ahead, begin to move into the Northeast. We’ll start off with sun and clouds, a very warm & humid day, with highs in the mid to upper 80’s. During the afternoon, we’ll begin with scattered showers and storms popping up anywhere at anytime. Not everyone will see action, but those that do will have some tropical, slow moving, heavy showers and storms to deal with. Flooding could be an issue as torrential rain + slow moving cells = problems.

Activity becomes more widespread into the evening and nighttime for the entire area. Just as with the rest of this summer, we’ll have to break it down that day as to who sees what and when. The main area of energy goes to our north, but waves forming ahead could bring some concentrated and longer lasting thunderstorm action into or near the area. Highs Wednesday a very soupy mid to upper 80’s.

Thursday, we dial the activity back but turn up the heat as we wait for a secondary front to bring some relief. Most of the energy will be spent on Wednesday, but that doesn’t mean we can’t see a heavy storm during the process, especially as we go for upper 80’s to possibly some low 90’s in the area.

It looks as if we speed things up a bit and get everything out of here Thursday night instead of Friday, paving the way for increasing sunshine Friday, and a very nice day at that. Expect clearing skies, gradual easing of humidity, and highs in the mid 80’s.

IF this holds, we are setting ourselves up for a wonderful weekend both Saturday and Sunday. Expect sunny skies both days, and highs in the low 80’s with relatively low humidity.

In the long range, a very brief break and a sampling of early September is still possible at some point in mid August, but I think the warmth/heat returns for the 3rd quarter of August. Don’t be shocked if we see a breezy cool day in the 70’s, and only a few days later, we’re shooting for 90 and humid again.
