NYC Summer Goes Out a Winner

09/21/24 8:32am ET

Good morning everyone. Our last day of summer in the Northeast is a winner as low pressure hangs off of the coast just far enough to bring a mix of sun and clouds &.mild temps to New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The east end of Long Island still has issues since it remains too close to that edge of precip, and we expect some more clouds and scattered showers out of this. Overall the area is sitting pretty compared to other parts around the horn.

For New England, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Southeast Connecticut remains socked in with the clouds and moderate gusty showers. Eventually things will slide far enough away, but I think we still have a couple of days to go. We’re also seeing enhanced tides up and down the East Coast due to stubborn low pressure bringing a prolonged east/northeast wind. Areas such as the Chesapeake Bay and Long Island Sound could still see some minor to moderate coastal flooding.

Meanwhile, Florida continues to do Florida-things with scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms possible across the lower part of the state and the Keys. Look for locally strong winds, hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk of a few waterspouts. Just as the past few days, we expect action to settle down as the night wears on and thunderstorms lose their source of fuel.

Our main concern today shifts to Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri, with widespread severe weather possible. Low pressure will be exiting the Southwest and lower Rockies into the plains, colliding with warm and humid air. This will set the stage for very heavy showers and thunderstorms in Colorado and New Mexico, then the action shifts and strengthens as it moves east/northeast.

We’ll have the entire selection on the menu later today and tonight as far as severe weather. Look for very large hail, widespread damaging winds, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk for some strong tornadoes.
