NYC Summer Takes Break After Today’s Severe Weather Threat
Good morning everyone. Technically we start the “break” today with cooler temps, but we won’t be getting a break from the weather overall. Severe storms are expected to pop this afternoon, and I’ll explain below how the action will most likely pan out across the NYC Metro Area. Comfortable weather rushes in tomorrow, and I think overall summer takes a week or so off, before it resets and we potentially see some of the hottest weather this season during the 2nd week of August, onward.
SATELLITE
Tropical-esque skies and clouds will grace us for much of the day. We’ll have humid conditions and highs in the upper 70’s to near 80. You’ll be able to feel the moisture in the air, and that’ll provide the fuel for some heavy showers and storms later this afternoon. Aside from the chance of a pop up shower, I believe we remain dry until 2 or 3pm, then we’ll have a better chance of a heavy shower or storm at any time.
I do not believe we’ll see the typical cold front, widespread line of storms moving through the northeast. The action I see is more cluster/pop-up like, and can happen fast, especially if those storms form over you. Individual cells and clusters are tricky to forecast, and they also have the potential to be more dangerous. Any cells that do form, will be capable of torrential rain, frequent lightning, strong winds, hail, and an isolated tornado. This means severe weather will be more localized than a widespread, singular event.
This is also not one of those situations where Long Island will see the typical storm fizzle. Depending on how the energy distributes, you may see severe weather pop up out of nowhere over the island itself, then drift to the ENE or ESE slowly.
WEATHER RADAR
Tomorrow and Saturday are looking beautiful and dry, with comfortable temps. Expect sunshine, breezy conditions, and low 80’s Friday. Winds will go from breezy to steady on Saturday, more sunshine, and highs in the upper 70’s to near 80.
A sun and cloud mix reappears on Sunday, with low 80’s returning and the slight chance of a shower.
Overall, I think we catch a nice (and typical) summer “break”, where things are in the low to mid 80’s for a week as summer “reloads”. In approx. a week or so, a Bermuda High is going to try and form, pumping hot air into the region if it comes to fruition. This could be not only the hottest air of the season, but also the longest stretch of the season as well. We’ll be keeping an eye on this scenario to see if it pans out, we still have a while to go.
