NYC Unseasonably Bitter Cold Airmass Brings Teens Possible Tomorrow Night
Good morning everyone. Beautiful blue skies are with us temporarily this morning, then we’ll begin to cloud up as the day wears on. This will be the harbinger of our next system due in overnight and tomorrow, which will pack a strong punch of relatively bitter cold air for mid November. We are in this very fast pattern of quick blasts of cold, quick modifications, more cold, and it seems like it’ll be this story for most of this month.
SATELLITE
Not too many people in the Northeast are experiencing blue skies, so for those in NJ, NYC, and Long Island, take advantage of the few hours we have. Clouds come in later, but we’ll remain dry through the day. Highs today in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.
Overnight, we continue to the process of lowering and thickening those clouds, and we’ll have the slight chance of some light rain before sunrise tomorrow. Mid to upper 30’s will set us up for a cold rain, which will translate into our experience tomorrow.
REGIONAL RADAR
Tomorrow, that front is knocking on our door and we’ll get into a steadier cold rain early to mid morning. As that cold air meets the precipitation before it ends, we could see a period of mixed precipitation and maybe even a very brief moment of mostly wet snow. Highs tomorrow will happen early, then drop through the 30’s during late morning/afternoon. We may even be below freezing by sunset if things drop fast enough.
The mixed precipitation won’t be a big deal other than a early show of winter, and the big story remains the bitter cold. Look for a starry night tomorrow, with lows in the upper teens to low 20’s in NYC proper. That’s some mid-January stuff right there, so you can imagine how cold it’ll be away from the City. Single digits are possible well upstate, but some low to mid teens will be found N&W of NYC and remote parts of Long Island; such as the Pine Barrens and Hamptons.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
On Wednesday, we don’t recover much and will also have a steady NW flow to keep the skin feeling cold. Treat it like you would in the winter and dress accordingly. We’ll have sunny skies, breezy conditions, and highs in the low to mid 30’s. Wednesday night, we don’t plunge into the teens again, but we’ll certainly be below freezing with mid to upper 20’s.
We’ll slowly recover Thursday, but remain well below average. Look for clouds and sun with mid 40’s.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
Friday looks to be the best day of the week (aside from today) as we get to near 50 before more cold air returns for the weekend. As of now, Saturday is looking dry and colder with low 40’s, then we have to watch how close our next system gets on Sunday. I don’t foresee any issues with frozen precipitation, but we could have some clouds and maybe some cold light rain depending on how close things get.
