NYC Very Cold Air Moving In Tomorrow Through Saturday

Good late morning everyone. Yesterday’s system went about as smooth as things can go when dealing with a complicated forecast and multiple shifts in rain/snow lines. Most places in the NYC metro area saw a dusting to a coating before mixing with sleet, then changing to rain & mist.

Our next system is passing well to our south and way out to sea, but that’ll open up the gates for some arctic air to settle in temporarily. It’ll be the coldest air of the season so far, and this will be the big story for the next few days. Overall, I’ve been happy with the way the month has been going forecast-wise, as this very cold air was discussed a few weeks ago and expected towards the end of the month; as well as the lack of any big systems.

Social media and other outlets are exploding about a system late Sunday till possibly Tuesday, but there’s nothing that makes my hair stand up right now. We have a long way to go and too many things need to come together perfectly. Typically when you have systems and air masses on the move, and models show things coming together perfectly 5 days out and 2 systems away, it usually doesn’t work out.

Check out the immediate forecast below.

For today, we dry out, begin to increase those winds, and have a mix of sun and clouds (mostly clouds). Highs will be a seasonable 40 degrees, but the wind chills will drop as the winds increase.

Tomorrow, we have morning clouds, then partial clearing late. It’ll be a nasty day as colder air heads in, with gusty conditions, and highs in the upper 20’s to low 30’s. Overnight, the arctic air settles in and we will drop into the mid to upper teens.

Friday will be the coldest day of the season so far as we struggle to get out of the low to mid 20’s for highs. Lows will be in the low to mid teens, and single digits are possible in the Pine Barrens of Long Island and N&W of the NYC area.

We’ll have another cold one on Saturday, with highs in the upper 20’s and lows in the upper teens.

After that, we begin to modify the temps ahead of our next system, but the jury is still out on how this is going to play out. It’s quite possible this one may “rhyme” with yesterdays system if certain ingredients don’t come together. For the moment, we’ll call for increasing clouds on Sunday, with highs in the mid 30’s.
