NYC WINTER OBITUARY PREMATURE – Good morning everyone. As we experience the coldest air of the season, some are jumping ahead and discussing the end of winter already. While a reprieve is on tap, don’t be lulled into a false sense that winter is over.
First and foremost, dangerous cold and wind chills have returned. Highs today will be in the low to mid teens, single digits at night, and some places could experience near or below zero lows.
Highs begin to slow recover tomorrow, with near 20° temps, and actually rising slightly overnight with the next system and overrunning air approaching.
On Monday, we’ll have the slight chance of some light snow associated with a weak system; highs in the low 30’s. As it’s departs, we could see a mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow, then a brief period of all snow. With lows in the upper 20’s to near 30, we could see a crunchy layer on top of our snow on the ground now, so make sure you clear what you can.
The “thaw” starts Tuesday, with highs in the mid to upper 30’s. We dip back down a little bit on Wednesday, then return to the upper 30’s Thursday. Depending on what our next system does, we could get into the 40’s and possibly bust through them next weekend.
In the long range, we’ll have a few opportunities at some warmer air, possibly unseasonably warm air. However, I feel that this is just a temporary break/Front related. Bitter cold air will begin to recharge and pool back up in Canada, looking to flood back in during the last 1/3 of January.
