WARM SEPTEMBER SENDOFF HURRICANE MARIA TARGETS SWORDFISH
WARM SEPTEMBER SENDOFF HURRICANE MARIA TARGETS SWORDFISH – Good morning everyone! We have a beautiful stretch ahead of us, especially for those who want to hang onto the warm weather for a little while longer.
Today, we’ll have sun and clouds, more sun as you go west, and highs 80-85. Tomorrow and Saturday, the sun increases but we hang out in the 80° realm instead of mid 80’s. However, heat and humidity increase a notch for Sunday and Monday, with highs in the mid 80’s for Sunday, then 80-85 Monday with the chance of a sea breeze developing.
There is some talk of record temps possible throughout this stretch, and while this is true, those records broken will be more localized as opposed to the benchmark we use; Central Park. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, Central Park saw mid 90’s in late September, so those records will definitely not fall. There are some areas in Brooklyn and Queens though, who’s record highs are low to mid 80’s; those records could be in jeopardy today and Sunday.
As far as Hurricane Maria is concerned, at 115mph, she’s starting to strengthen back up a bit. Expect her to continue to do so until she starts to transit the areas Jose just went over. With Jose’s slow movement, he spent enough time over the same area to cool off normally much warmer water by churning up the cooler water under the surface (upwelling). This will start to weaken Maria somewhere well off of the North Carolina coast.
We still have a week to go, but if models are correct and the steering mechanisms don’t suddenly change, Maria looks to make a safe enough passage off of the East Coast; only bothering shipping interests and sword-fisherman. That being said, she will be bringing some nice surf and strong rip currents into the area without a doubt.
Stay tuned as we see how long the warm weather will last before fall kicks in, and we will hopefully guide Maria out for good over the next few days.
