Wednesday NYC Severe Weather Discussion
Good morning everyone. We have a partly sunny, warm, and humid start to our day this morning, with dew points in the near-Florida range. This will help add fuel to the fire later in spots, and we’ll get right into it by discussing our severe weather outlook for NYC and other parts of the area.
SATELLITE
To start our forecast, we’ll be partly sunny, very warm, and muggy for the day. We’ll have highs in the mid to upper 80’s throughout the area.
We’ll start watching the radar between 1 & 2pm to see what starts forming ahead of our cold front, enhanced by a wave that’ll push ahead of it. The biggest risk for severe weather, will be Nassau County on west, and into areas N&W of NYC as well as many parts of NJ.
Once everything gets going, that wave has the potential to move in almost a North/South configuration, which could prove to be a big problem for central and southern NJ in terms of wind damage and isolated tornadoes. The biggest threat for our area, will also be strong winds, as well as hail, frequent lightning, and localized flooding.
Again, we’ll start watching the radar between 1 & 2 to see what starts popping, then we’ll watch very closely from 4pm onward to see what pushes our way. Areas of Suffolk still need to keep a close eye, but the concentration of action right now looks to be to your west.
Things may develop rapidly and storms may start to move very quickly once they reach high enough altitude, so pay attention and give the storms respect by taking proper precautions. Don’t get caught out on the beach or in a boat in the afternoon/evening.
REGIONAL RADAR
We clear out tomorrow for a pleasant, dry, and seasonal day with highs in the mid 80’s. We’ll have a repeat on Friday, but increase the humidity slightly with an onshore flow developing late.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Our weekend is looking mostly quiet and very typical NYC summertime. Look for a very warm and humid day on Saturday with the slight chance of an afternoon popcorn storm, highs in the mid to upper 80’s. Sunday is looking very warm to hot, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s.
The beginning of the week is also looking very warm to hot and humid, but we’ll stop right there as we focus on today’s severe weather potential and allow the long range models to calm down a bit.
