Cold Air Arrives Tonight Questions Remain For Early Week
Good morning everyone. Cold air is on its way after a decent day today, setting us up for a cold weekend. We also have our system for early next week, and many questions remain as to what this will look like, if anything at all.
SATELLITE
Sunshine dominates today and a breeze will pick up as that colder air starts to head in. Expect highs in the low 40’s, then mid 20’s overnight.
We don’t recover much tomorrow, and will be lucky to break 30 with blustery conditions. Winds will gust to near 35-40mph, giving us some nasty wind chills. Look for highs in the upper 20’s to low 30’s.
Things relax a bit Sunday, but we’ll still have a stiff NW wind (minus the gusts). We’ll have sunshine and low to mid 30’s.
This is where things get “complicated”. On January 17th, I discussed in my forecast a possible overrunning situation for the upcoming week, with snow possibly changing to rain. As time went on, it looked as if high pressure hung on a little too strong, keeping most of the precipitation to our west and south.
Now things look like they’re relaxing a bit, but the question is “how much?” We are still very early in the game, but we do know this and we always did know this – we have a system. That’s about the extent of it.
This isn’t a Nor’easter-type system where we have to wait for the ingredients to come together, and see if it forms & moves up the coast. This is a general west to east mover and it’s been a feature in the models for a week now. At this point I don’t see the system trending back to oblivion for the NYC area. However, it could trend back to a slightly drier situation, giving us very light precip. Or, it could continue to trend to an even more relaxed state, which could translate into a warmer solution locally. That would mean we are back to the original snow to rain situation when this thing does move through.
Regardless, it’s too early to start talking snow amounts anywhere for anyone in the Tri-State. The best chance to see snow, would be central PA and parts of central NY by the Finger Lakes and PA border. That’s about the extent of it, and whenever you have this type of setup, things could get complicated very fast in terms of setting up rain/snow/ice lines.
Stay tuned and we will work it out, minus the hype and guessing.
