Deep Blue Skies Mild Temps For NYC Today

04/16/24 9:49am ET

Good morning everyone. While the New York City area is enjoying a perfect day today with light northwesterlies, blue skies, and mild temperatures, the Midwest/upper Midwest is getting hammered by severe weather. That system will eventually play a role in the Northeast, but for now the focus is out west where we have ongoing issues.

Tornado watches in northeast Kansas are about to expire, but strong to severe thunderstorms continue to trek across eastern Kansas, eastern Nebraska, northwest Missouri, and southwest Iowa. Many of these areas that are seeing storms now and did so last night, will have to face another round this afternoon and evening as low pressure hangs back west and meanders to the east.

The sunshine working the atmosphere and the heating of the day, will help ripen conditions for another round of severe storms, then another round again after that. That is not a typo, we are expecting 3 rounds total of severe storms through this area and up into Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as time goes on. Areas of Arkansas and Illinois could get in on the action as well.

I presume we will see another set of severe thunderstorm and tornado watch-boxes issued as the day wears on in areas that are expected to see these storms. As will all of the rest of the action we’ve seen, look for large hail, damaging straight-line winds, frequent lightning, and the possibility of strong tornadoes. Again, listen to your local agencies for up to date warnings and instructions. The time frame of this risk is now through the overnight hours from west to east (southeast & northeast).

Here is your local New York City metro forecast –

Expect clear blue skies today, dry conditions, and highs in the low 70’s in most spots. We’ll have some AM sunshine tomorrow, then clouds roll in late. We could have a few widely scattered showers, but the chance we remain dry throughout the day is pretty high. It’ll be much cooler with highs in the near 60 range.

Look for a cloudy and raw day on Thursday, with on and off showers and highs 50-55. Clouds stick around Friday with 55-60 degree temps.
