Dry Heat Gives Way to Soupy Conditions in New York City

07/07/24 12:31pm ET

Good afternoon everyone. The Northeast is enjoying some drier conditions today even though it’s on the hot side. Things will change as soon-to-be Hurricane Beryl helps to push that soupy tropical air back north from the Southeast. Meanwhile, the Southeast will continue to be hot & humid with absolutely no relief in sight.

The big story remains Tropical Storm Beryl, with dropping barometric pressure and slowed movement to the northwest. It is really taking its time getting to the coast, which has some major implications as far as storm surge and intensity once it finally makes it to the Texas shore.

As of now, winds remain at 65mph, but the last advisory has pressure dropping to 992mb as heavy convection continues to develop near the center. I would say by the next advisory or the one after, we should be looking at Hurricane Beryl again. Regardless of what Beryl does from here as far as strength, we are expecting damaging winds, copious amounts of rain, and life-threatening storm surge.

Storm surge estimates seem to be a little bit on the conservative side in my opinion, and could wind up being a little more significant. Either way, the forecasted 4-6ft storm surge along parts of the Texas coast is very dangerous and destructive regardless. Remember, this is 4-6ft of water ABOVE ground, not above your average high tide. It will also have large waves on top of that, so the language is a little misleading as far as destructive and life=threatening potential.

Please listen to your local agencies for the latest advisories. For those in the storm surge warning areas, the time to evacuate is now if you haven’t already.
