Deep Summer Returns to NYC

Deep Summer Returns to NYC

07/05/24 12:42pm

Good afternoon everyone. Sun & Clouds and humid weather has settled back into the Northeast, and it’ll ve typical summer the next couple of days with a chance of heavy PM storms each day. 90 or near 90 degree temps will be commonplace starting tomorrow, and Hurricane Beryl rowing into Texas well help keep the heat in the Northeast and East Coast for a prolonged period.

Hurricane Beryl remains our top story, especially since the chance is increasing for a Texas landfall or near the Texas/Mexico border. As of our 10am CDT advisory, Hurricane Beryl is maintaining hurricane-status with winds of 85mph and WNW movement at 16-18mph. For the moment, we do not have any hurricane watches posted for the Texas coast, but things are about to change.

Last week it was looking as if Texas would be spared from the worst of Hurricane Beryl. This was due to the movement of Beryl, plus the timing of high pressure and a front sagging down from the Central States. Unfortunately, Beryl has slowed a bit and our front has sped up a bit. This also changed Beryl’s track slightly, bringing its path a little further up the Yucatan Peninsula.

All of this combined, gives us a further jog to the north, and a stronger system. Hurricane Beryl is expected to reach Texas as a Hurricane, and possibly a damaging one at that. While torrential rain/flooding and wind damage are an obvious risk, we need to focus on the storm surge risk as well. Even if Beryl somehow didn’t reach Texas as a hurricane, it’s bringing a lot of water with it due to the mass amount of time spent over the ocean; and from it reaching Category 4 and 5 status. That water doesn’t simply go away.

Expect life threatening storm surge, possibly in excess of 10+ feet in spots. Our main ficus as of now remains South Padre Island to Corpus Christi, and points north to some of the smaller bay-side towns past Corpus. This is a dangerous situation that requires continued watching. Please listen to all watches and warnings issued, especially storm surge warnings.

Stay tuned, and here is the latest on your NYC Metro forecast –
