DRY WEEK SHOWERY WEEKEND LONG RANGE WARMTH
DRY WEEK SHOWERY WEEKEND LONG RANGE WARMTH
DRY WEEK SHOWERY WEEKEND LONG RANGE WARMTH – Good afternoon everyone! Drier but cooler air has worked its way in as low pressure continues to spool up around northern Maine and Nova Scotia. Clouds and sun, a cool breeze, and crisp, fall-like air will continue to stick around and we’ve maxed out in the upper 50’s, low 60’s today. More of the same tomorrow through Thursday, with mostly to partly sunny skies and temps in the low to mid 60’s.
Dry air will continue on Friday, but we’ll have increasing clouds due to an approaching system segmented into two parts; an area of low pressure heading south of the NYC area, and one spinning through southern Canada by the Great Lakes and into western NY state. As of now, I’m not thinking of any all day rainouts, but Saturday looks to be the drier of the two days during our weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday look to be cloudy, with scattered light to moderate rain, highs in the low 60’s. We’ll keep an eye on this system and see how well it organizes, making any adjustments to the forecast if need be.
In the long range, heat will start to really build in the Midwest and the blocking looks to ease in the east and dig in into the west. What this usually equates to is a ridge slow drifting eastward towards the east coast. Depending on how strong the ridge is, how slow it moves, if it moves at all, we could be looking at a very warm period the last 10 days of May (+/- 2 days). I’ve been watching this for well over a week now and the signs continue to show the prospect of this increasing. That being said, it’s important we remain cautious for several reasons – a. ridges this time of year in the long range can still and do collapse b. water temps remain normal to slightly below normal due to this cool period, leaving open the possibility of maritime air fighting back and/or at least much cooler temps and foggy conditions at the immediate coast.
We will continue to watch it all as everything unfolds. Just like this winter, the forecast for the NYC area remains complicated.

Northeast Radar
Radar is quiet in the NYC area, but scattered showers continue to plague upstate NY and a large swath of Maine.
