FALL BREAK PRECEDES WARM RETURN

FALL BREAK PRECEDES WARM RETURN – Good afternoon everyone! We have two kinds of crisp coming; The first is that fall bite in the air at night that feels good to take in. The other is the sound of me eating tortilla chips on my porch and drinking margaritas when the warm weather returns.

First, we have a relatively warm, breezy day today as expected. Things have really dried out humidity-wise, but we’re still one more day out until the truly cooler air arrives. Highs today will be 75-80, possibly some low 80’s left in the more notoriously warmer spots such as downtown Brooklyn and the interior of Queens. Tonight, we drop into the mid 50’s and with winds calming down, it could help jumpstart some radiational cooling; with temps getting into the 40’s north and west of the NYC area and the Pine Barrens of Long Island.

Tomorrow, the cool air fully moves in, with sunny skies, light NW winds, and highs around 70. Overnight tomorrow, clouds increase as a weak upper level low begins to transit the area. We’ll have the slight chance of a few scattered showers, and temps will dip into the mid 50’s again. With the cloud cover, we may not dip as low in outlying areas, but it could be several degrees cooler away from the heat island NYC is.

Saturday will be the coolest day of this stretch, with sun and clouds in the morning, more sun than clouds in the afternoon, and highs 65-70 in most areas. On Sunday, we bounce back a bit into the low 70’s, then gradually go back up throughout the beginning of the week as things continue to look dry/system-free. Mid week next week, we start to begin to see 75-80 degree temps.

The long range continues to be questionable as far as what the warm air wants to do as it slides across the Midwest. Does a backdoor cold front or tropical moisture from south of Cuba dash the chance of another summer run? The potential for warmer and more humid air moving back in is most certainly there, but we have to wait and see how a few nuances work out before we make that call.

In the meantime, cool air begins to move in, but it’ll be brief in nature, then above normal temps slowly creep back in. (normal temps are around 70 this time of year)
