Heavy Rain Moves Into Northeast & NYC
03/23/24 8:38am ET
Good morning everyone. Our coastal storm has taken shape and is on the move quickly out of the Southeast and now impacting the I95 Corridor from the Mid-Atlantic, into the Northeast, and New England. Heavy rain is knocking on the door of the NYC Metro Area as we speak, and steady snows in upper New England will go heavy as time goes on.
We have several features to contend with, one of them is the prospect of flash flooding that could occur in notoriously poor drainage areas from Philadelphia on up into New York City and northwest New Jersey. Heavy rain and rumbles of thunder will trek over the same areas over the course of the next 4-8+ hours before finally tapering off. That will be enough to drop 2-4″+ of rain, which will be more than enough to cause some travel headaches and concern for personal property.
The next issue will be the potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding during high tide cycles as our low pressure system moves northeast. We are watching this unfold right now in areas of the Southeast, and we’ll continue to watch this threat from now till tomorrow morning in the Northeast and New England. We’ll also watch New England closely as Winter Storm Warnings have been posted for the potential for 6″+ of snow and local ice storm conditions as you get closer to the Maine coastline. In areas of upper Maine and the mountains of New Hampshire, 12-18″+ of snow is likely.
The last component will be the wind associated with deepening low pressure. In coastal outcroppings such as Cape Hatteras and the Cape Cod area, wind gusts in excess of 50mph are possible. We could also see strong winds across the Forks of Long Island, and generally strong wind gusts otherwise across the NYC Metro area up to 40mph.
Everything is gone by tomorrow afternoon, and we should have some quiet conditions till midweek. Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –
SATELLITE
Look for heavy rain and rumbles of thunder today across the area. Highs will be near 50, and winds should begin to increase as we go on. Winds may gust to near 40mph by evening and overnight. Rain tapers off late this evening, then we begin to dry out.
Sunshine returns tomorrow, but it’ll be blustery and chilly. Expect a breezy day with highs only in the mid 40’s.
WEATHER RADAR
Our cold air modifies on Monday, with low 50’s, sunshine, and lighter winds. Look for AM sun on Tuesday, with low 50’s and increasing clouds late.
Rain returns Wednesday and Thursday, but we are not looking at anything as intense as today’s system. Expect more low 50’s as highs with on and off showers Wednesday, and steadier rain Thursday.
