Flooding Rains Move Into New York City Tomorrow

03/22/24 10:55am ET

Good morning everyone. We continue to watch our developing coastal storm, and right now Florida is the focus until everything begins to slide up the East Coast. A large batch of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms has moved into the southwest coast of Florida and will slowly creep across the peninsula.

With the slow movement, plus another round of heavier storms expected later today, flood watches have been posted for areas of south Florida. Look for copious amounts of rain in the area and all the way through the Florida Keys. Our storms later today will increase the concern for severe weather, including the risk for waterspouts, isolated large hail and tornadoes. The time frame for this risk remains between 2 and 10pm today.

Rain has already begun to spread up into the Southeast and will eventually bring heavier rain and rumbles into the area overnight and early tomorrow. We could also see a thin line of strong to severe weather form in the afternoon, which could move across parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and southeast North Carolina. The biggest risk with these storms will be damaging winds and small hail. Coastal flooding will also be an issues during tomorrow AM’s high tide cycle in the Southeast, especially for flood-prone areas such as Charleston, SC.

For the Northeast, we begin to cloud up overnight tonight, then light steady rain begins to work in tomorrow morning; eventually getting steadier and heavier as time goes on. Flood watches are also posted in the Tri-State Area for 2-4″+ rains possible, and winter storm watches posted for upper New England, where parts of Maine could see 8-12″+ of snow.

Winds expected with this system remain to between 40-50mph for coast outcroppings such as Cape Hatteras, the Cape Cod area, and maybe even Long Island.
