NYC Unseasonably Cold Day Today Before Saturday Coastal Storm
Good morning everyone. Cold air has taken hold in the Northeast behind some pretty wild snow squalls yesterday for parts of interior sections. We still have some scattered flurries well inland, but the big story remains a Gulf-sourced coastal storm that’ll ride up the East Coast and cause some issues from Florida to Maine.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms have already begun to develop along the Texas coast and spread west towards Louisiana. That will be our Gulf low that spawns flooding rain and embedded severe weather across Florida late overnight tonight/early tomorrow morning and into the evening. Expect flooding in areas as 3-6″ of rain is expected to fall where storms continue to form and drift over the same areas. That will be the big story for Florida, but we’ll also watch closely the threat for severe weather. Isolated large hail, waterspouts, and isolated tornadoes are possible across central and south Florida tomorrow morning through the evening.
We’ll watch that energy transfer into the Southeast with more heavy rain and rumbles, but we’ll also add into he mix the chance of some coastal flooding; especially Saturday morning’s high tide cycle in Charleston, SC. The risk of coastal flooding will move up the coast with each high tide cycle into Sunday morning, then things will settle down as our coastal storm heads up into Maritime Canada. Strong wind gusts are expected in outcrops such as Cape Hatteras, NC and Cape Cod, MA (and the outlying islands). Winds could gust up to 50mph in spots as low pressure deepens and races northeast.
Here is your local NYC forecast where will will discuss local rain amounts –
SATELLITE
Expect a breezy and cold day today with highs an unseasonably chilly low 40’s. Lows drop into the 20’s overnight, then more sunshine tomorrow with mid to upper 40’s.
WEATHER RADAR
Clouds increase overnight Friday, then rain moves in and increases in intensity as Saturday goes on. Look for rain, heavy at times, with increasing winds (especially along the immediate shore). We could also have a few rumbles of thunder, but no severe weather is expected. Our biggest concern is flooding rain and coastal flooding during high tide cycles. Look for 2-4″ of rain total between Saturday and Saturday night, with highs near 50.
Things clear out Sunday for a breezy and chilly day in the 40’s.
Temps will begin to modify on Monday, but we are still on the cool side. Highs in the 50’s both Monday & Tuesday and dry.
