HURRICANE JOSE STOKES HURRICANE BOB MEMORIES
HURRICANE JOSE STOKES HURRICANE BOB MEMORIES – Good morning everyone. This morning’s model runs continue to bring Hurricane Jose too close for comfort, meaning Tropocal Storm watches should be going up very soon, especially for the extreme SE coast of New England, if things don’t change soon.
For those who remember Hurricane Bob back in 1991, Jose is stirring up some bad memories. Many though ask themselves, “who’s Bob?”. This is because Bob was a very localized event due to his compact nature and similar (but not exact path) path as Jose. Bob brushed eastern Long Island and the New England coast with Category 2 winds and left areas in shambles. However, if you were standing in Nassau County Long Island that day, you were asking yourself, “we had a hurricane?”.
To the relief of most, I’ll say this, Jose can’t fill Bob’s shoes aside from the fact that it may be a very localized event. Jose is looking ragged again this morning even though it is slightly stronger at 80mph sustained. Steering currents have taken away the healthy look of its inflow, and it will hopefully be downgraded to a strong tropical storm by the time it reaches anywhere near land (if thats the path it takes).
Extreme eastern Long Island and out to Cape Cod need to continue to watch Jose closely for possible tropical storm conditions. Also, islands such as Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard have the chance to see the highest of winds and the strongest effects, so it’s important not to take Jose lightly. That being said, Jose is still not Bob, but still treat it with respect since it will be capable of downing trees, very rough seas, and storm surge with the help of a new moon.
Locally, a very close approach from Jose could cause minor to moderate coastal flooding in the usual flood prone areas due to the new moon. If you have flooding during Nor’easters in your area, you need to pay attention if Jose brushes eastern Long Island and/or the New England coast.
For the time being, low 80’a continue here if we can squeeze out some sun after some morning fog and a scattered shower. Then sun returns tomorrow and so do the low 80’s. Warm weather wants to continue, but Jose’s close approach will knock things down a little bit for a few days. After that, we’ll see if 80’s return again, which is entirely plausible if Jose doesn’t kink up the jet stream.
