HURRICANE MARIA INFLUENCE CAUSES OUTER BANKS TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS – Good morning. As stated a couple of days ago on Angry Ben’s Angry Weather FB page, we needed to give everything 24-48 hours for things to settle down from Jose’s early fizzle. Everything went a little nutty and the machines didn’t know what to do with Hurricane Maria.

Now that we know what the steering mechanisms look like, we return to a more sane outcome that looks to hold very steady. The Northeast remains safe and protected by a front that’ll kick out this summer air later in the week, moving Maria along with it out to sea. What we will see from Maria though, is a continuation of high surf and rip currents.

However, the Mid Atlantic is a different story. Tropical Storm warnings are up for the Outer Banks and well as concerns about storm surge. As Hurricane Maria makes her final approach before moving out to sea, her outer windfield will brush easternmost North Carolina, bringing with it tropical storm force winds and/or wind gusts, some outer-band precip, rough surf, rip currents, beach erosion, elevated tides, and minor/moderate coastal flooding.

Outer banks people should prepare for conditions seen recently in Nantucket with Jose, and also be prepared to sustain some water damage in low lying areas. We’re not talking about a widespread, catastrophic event, but it could be enough to cause some possible headaches.

Locally, summer in NYC continues with highs near 90 again today. We cool off gradually tomorrow and Wednesday with low to mid 80’s, then near 80 Thursday, and low 70’s Friday as a fall blast moves in. After reaching near 90 today, we may not even hit 70 Saturday or Sunday.
