MATTHEW BEARING DOWN ON FLORIDA, NICE IN NYC TO END THE WEEK

MATTHEW BEARING DOWN ON FLORIDA

NICE IN NYC TO END THE WEEK

Hurricane Matthew is currently moving into the Bahamas, and has its sights set on Florida. It has been downgraded to a category 3 storm, but it is still extremely dangerous. As it aproaches Florida, the environment may favor strengthening back into a category 4. Hurricane warnings have been issued from Miami to Daytona beach. It is just about a foregone conclusion that the Atlantic coast of Florida will see direct effects from Matthew on Friday.

I am cautiously optimistic about Matthews chances of impacting the northeast, thanks to some favorable model data today. Both the GFS and Euro models show a slower moving Matthew, which will allow the time needed for a strong area of high pressure to build into the Midwest. This should squash Matthew further south and let it slowly drift out into the Atlantic.

What could pose a bit of a problem is newly formed Tropical Storm Nicole. It is a fairly weak storm and much smaller than Matthew, but it may not allow Matthew to move completely out to sea. The models have been hinting that Matthew may just meander about just offshore for days, with cycles of weakening and strengthening and perhaps additional land impacts. The situation will continue to evolve into next week.

Back at home, NYC is seeing some of its nicest weather in several days. Sunshine is back in full force today, and is likely to stick around into Friday as high pressure builds in from the north. As it does, winds will shift and temperatures will turn milder for Thursday and Friday. Highs both days will be in the mid to upper 70s. Keep in mind that nightime temperatures will be very cool over the next few days, with lows dropping into the low 50s. Looking ahead to the weekend, showers are possible at some point on Saturday as a cold front comes through, perhaps even pulling some moisture up from Matthew before it departs. Sunday should be dry with partly sunny skies.   -GB
