GRADUAL IMPROVEMENTS FOR NYC
Matthew remains a major meteorological focus, and will continue to do so for the next several days.
The category 4 storm is packing sustained winds of sustained at 130 mph, with gusts as high as 160. It has now begun moving to the north and has its sights on Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba. Hurricane watches and warnings have been issued as far north as the Bahamas.
HURRICANE MATTHEW NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER FORECAST
The main discrepancy lies in 6+ day range.
The European model remains the slower model. On Saturday afternoon, it has Matthew just off of Charleston, SC. A strong upper level low will bring a cold front across the lower 48 this week, which may help to push Matthew out to sea. A blocking high to the northeast will give way just enough to allow that, but will help to slow down the movement of Hurricane Matthew.
The GFS however continues to be the more progressive model, bringing Hurricane Matthew along the coast and just offshore by Saturday. The reason for this would be a stronger blocking high to the northeast, and a greater interaction with the trough.
NYC weather will be slowly improving over the next few days. Monday will be a mostly cloudy day with some breaks of sun. A spot shower cannot be ruled out. The biggest improvement from the weekend will be the temperature, with highs reaching the low to mid 70s. Unfortunately, and onshore flow will return on Tuesday, resulting in more cloud cover and cooler temperatures. It doesn’t look like we will fully see nicer weather until the middle of the week. By the weekend, all eyes will be on the coast and Matthew’s track. -GB
