Moderate Snow Accumulations Possible Around NYC Area

Good morning everyone. We have a busy weekend through mid-workweek coming up as we watch a series of systems generate some snow across multiple regions. We’ll take you step-by-step as far as the process goes in terms of combining bitter cold arctic air and abundant moisture.

First off, we’ll watch a weak front gather up late tonight into early tomorrow from the Great Lakes down to the Gulf Coast. Behind it, arctic air will be filtering in and already in place across the Upper Midwest. Light rain will develop areas of southern Ohio and Indiana, down to Mississippi and Alabama. North of that line, we’ll see some light snows across northern Ohio, into parts of western Pennsylvania and New York.

After that front passes through late Saturday, we’ll watch for a wave of low pressure to form in the Southeast along the stalled out front. As arctic air pushes into the Northeast and low pressure moves up the coast, we could see some moderate snow accumulations across parts of New York, New Jersey, and across New England.

The timeline on this second phase/system looks to be Sunday afternoon through early Monday from southwest to Northeast. Big cities such as New York City, Newark, and Boston, could see a quick dumping of a 3-6/4-8″ type snowfall with some locally higher amounts possible.

As that system departs, moisture will increase along the western Gulf Coast near Texas on the backside of our Arctic high pressure system. The problem is, arctic air will be dug in deep along the Gulf States, and we should see a decent breakout of wintry precipitation. Look for snow and ice to develop in central and eastern parts of Texas first during overnight Tuesday.

As low pressure gets going and moves east, all while pulling more cold air down from the north, snows will break out across most of Louisiana. Given the right conditions and depending on how deep that low pressure gets, rain may changeover to snow in areas such as Houston, TX. Across Louisiana, we could see an all snow or mostly snow event for New Orleans on Tuesday, which is a rare occurrence.

Snows will likely spread across parts of lower Alabama and Mississippi tuesday evening. As it does, we could see some freezing rain across parts of the Florida panhandle and south Georgia, while snow possibly spreads into upper Georgia, parts of South Carolina, then North Carolina Tuesday late afternoon into overnight Tuesday.

Look for sunshine today, with temps modifying into the near 40 range and very light winds for a comfortable feel.

WEATHER RADAR

Clouds increase tomorrow with some light rain possible in the afternoon. Highs in the low to mid 40’s. Clouds stick around on Sunday, with the chance of snow and/or rain/snow mix developing some time in the afternoon. Highs in the mid 30’s will mean anything falling will initially have issues sticking.

Overnight, temps drop quickly as any type of mix or wet snow turns to a fluffier type of snow. Snow could be moderate at times with a general 3-6″ possible. We could see some higher amounts if the intensity is a little greater. We may also see patches of ice underneath the snow as any rain, mix, or wet snow that fell will freeze.

Monday through Wednesday look insulting, with mid 20’s on Monday dropping into the teens for highs both Tuesday and Wednesday. It’ll also be blustery as that arctic air filters in. Lows overnight will be in the single digits Monday through Wednesday as well.
